The word chamomile comes from the Greek word chamaimelon, which means earth-apple. Chama means on the ground, and melon means apple. It is so-called because of the apple-like scent of the plant.

The name Matricaria is derived from the Latin word matrix, which means the womb. Since Matricaria Chamomilla was widely used in the gynecological complaints as menstrual cramps.

It has strong antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents hence very effective in treating stomach and intestinal cramps.

Almost more than 120 chemical constituents (active principle) have been found in chamomile. They are terpenes bisabolol, farnesene, chamazulene, APIGENIN, quercetin, patuletin, luteolin, coumarin.

It has been used in herbal medicine for sore stomach, skincare, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep, laxative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties.

It is also effective as an antispasmodic, anxiolytic, and cholesterol-lowering agent. Bisabolol has been effective in reducing the enzyme pepsin secreted by the stomach, thereby a great aid in gastric complaints.

And it also promotes epithelization and granulation of the skin in the affected area.

1-Head Complaints

The patient has a throbbing headache on one half of the brain, making him inclined to bend his head backward.

The patient develops hot clammy sweat on the forehead and scalp. They sweat more during sleep, almost wetting the hair.

Headache is more noticed in delicate and over fatigued women.

Headache worsens in the morning and at 9 pm, and they feel better only when their mind is engaged.

2-Eyes Complaints

The patient develops yellow conjunctiva. Their lids close spasmodically.

The patient experiences smarting pain in the lid.

3-Ears Complaints

The patient is prone to earache, and the pain makes them frantic.

The pain in the ear comes with soreness, swelling, and heat. The pain is of stitching type.

The patient feels as if the ear has been stopped up. They can also hear ringing in the ears, especially after bleeding from the ear.

During pain, the patient becomes sensitive to cold wind and noise. Music is just unbearable to the patient at such times.

A roaring sound is heard by the patient as if water is rushing out.  Heat is intense in the ear as if hot water was running out of them.

The earache is better by warmth.

4-Nose Complaints

The patient is susceptible to all smells.

When they develop coryza, there is a hot discharge from the nose with obstruction. Because of which the patient is unable to sleep.

The skin over the nose is wrinkled. The patient has a crawling sensation in the nose, which gets intense till the eyes become watery.

The patient has acuteness to smell. There is bleeding from the nose, which is thickened (clotted).

5-Face Complaints

Swelling or redness of the cheek is the hallmark symptom of the medicine. One cheek of the patient is red and hot, and the other is pale and cold.

The patient’s face is pale, distorted, and sunken due to pain. Nerve pain in the face is very commonly experienced by the patient with hot sweat on the head.

The facial pain extends up to the ear. Sweat is noticed on the face of the patient, especially after eating or drinking.

They also experience jerking of the facial muscles and tongue.

Sometimes there is stitching pain in the jaws extending to the inner ear and teeth. This can make their jaw feel weak.

6-Mouth Complaints

One can notice nightly salivation in patients. Toothache is very common in such personalities and especially women, during pregnancy.

Toothache occurs after taking anything warm and from coffee. On observation, the tongue is thick white-yellow fur.

Often there is jerking of the tongue. There is always bad and sour breath from the mouth with a bitter taste.

The patient also feels that their teeth are elongated.

7-Throat Complaints

Parotid and submaxillary glands are swollen. So, this leads to constriction of the throat and pain.

The patient feels as if there is a plugin in the throat due to swelling.

The pain can make the patient unable to swallow food.

There is hoarseness, hawking, and rawness of the larynx. This leads to a tickling dry cough.

8-Chest and Respiratory Complaints

The chest is tight and suffocative with cough.

Cough is accompanied by bitter expectoration in the daytime. They get spells of dry tickling cough.

Cough worsens from 9 to 12 pm during sleep.

One can hear the rattling of mucus in the child’s chest.

They get asthma from anger, dry weather, and it is better by bending their head back.

9-Stomach Complaints

The patients requiring this medicine are prone to gastralgia. They feel as if a stone is lying in the stomach.

They have severe bilious vomiting with griping pain in the stomach. They retch violently before vomiting.

After having morphia, vomiting is inevitable.

The eructation smell like rotten eggs. They sweat after eating and drinking.

Vomiting leads to thirst, and during thirst, they only desire cold water and sour drinks. They don’t like to drink coffee as it leads to nausea. They have an even aversion to warm drinks.

10-Abdominal Complaints

Chamomilla is an excellent remedy for abdomen colic.

The abdomen is distended, and they get spells of colic from time to time. The cheek becomes red during colic with hot sweat.

Pain is from side to side of its going upwards, especially after anger.

The colic is like cutting wind which worsens in the night and after urinating and is better by warm applications. The patient develops jaundice after anger.

Stools are hot sour, grass green, slimy hacked, yellow-green, and smell like rotten eggs. The patient develops diarrhea from cold, anger, and during dentition.

Sometimes there is griping pain in the navel region and pain in the small of the back.

11-Rectum & Urinary Complaints

The patient develops hemorrhoids with painful fissures.

The anus becomes swollen and appears pouting as if the abdomen were knotted and empty. Soreness in the anus is marked.

Urine passed is hot and yellow with stitches in the urethra.

12-Female Organs Complaints

Female’s experience profuse discharge of clotted dark blood with labor-like pains.

The patient is intolerant to pain. The leucorrhea is yellow, dark lumpy, and acrid.

Nipples become tender and inflamed.

Period pains are like irregular labor, like pains that go up then down the inner thighs.

Dysmenorrhea is observed in females from anger or emotions with sexual desire.

There is a discharge of dark foul blood with the occasional gush of bright red blood.

Menorrhagia with black clots, which is profuse and coldness of extremities and much thirst.

Delivery and postpartum:

After delivery, they are prone to more aching pains.

Convulsions are seen in females postpartum after anger.

They get cramps when the child nurses. Milk runs out in nursing women, especially after weaning.

Lochia is a discharge observed after delivery that is too profuse or bloody and suppressed.

13-Hands, Legs & Back Complaints

Hands

There is numbness and stiffness of hands when grasping the objects.

Palms become dry.

Legs

The patients are driven out of bed at night due to violent rheumatic pains, which compels them to walk about.

16-Fever

The patient develops fever from suppressed sweats or discharges.

There is profuse sweat on the head with thirst during fever. They develop chill and heat alternately.

They are chilly patients, yet they become easily overheated; hence they are prone to taking cold.

So, most of the time, during fever, one part is cold, and the other is hot, and this symptom worsens on uncovering.

In intermittent fever, the symptoms worsen at night. There is pressure in the pit of the stomach, which causes nausea or bilious vomiting, colic, diarrhea, and even painful emission of urine.

Heat stage: General heat of the body, especially in the evening or at night in the bed with anxiety, thirst, redness of cheeks, hot perspiration at forehead, head, and scalp.

And sometimes heat is observed on uncovering the body mixed with shivering or shuddering.

Sweat stage: After the heat stage, sour sweat comes, which causes itching on the skin.

Burning heat and redness in one of the cheeks with groaning and tossing about with cold or heat in the rest of the body is noticed.

The patient sweats at night when asleep.

Chill stage: Chilliness with internal heat is present. Chill and coldness of the body with burning hot face and hot breath is marked.

Continuous burning heat with violent thirst and the patient starts during sleep with furious delirium.

Chamomilla General Characteristic Symptoms

  • Pains are unbearable with numbness and associated with night sweats.
  • Complaints from anger, especially chill and fever.
  • The pain is so unbearable that it drives the patient to despair.
  • Pain is aggravated with heat, by evening, with heat and thirst and fainting with numbness of the affected part.
  • Eructation aggravates the pain.
  • They are oversensitive to open-air with a great aversion to wind, especially about the ears.
  • Toothache is very much marked when taking something hot or entering a warm room, during dentition, after tobacco, in bed, from coffee, during menses, or pregnancy.
  • Hyperesthesia of all senses.
  • When the pain begins, the patient quickly sinks from prostration.
  • Damaging effects of anger, mainly if he eats or drinks at that time.
  • Convulsive cramps in the limbs.
  • Syncope with a sensation of sinking and faintness in the precordial region.
  • Attacks of spam and convulsions with a red and bloated face and explosive movements in the eyes, lips, face, and tongue.
  • Epileptic convulsions with retraction of thumb and foam at the mouth are preceded by colic and followed by lethargy.
  • The child wants to lie down and will neither walk nor be carried in arms after convulsions.

Chamomilla Uses in Baby/Children

Symptoms –

  • Chamomilla is suitable for children with light brown hair who is excitable and oversensitive.
  • The children are highly irritable and get easily annoyed for the things which are not essential and are prone to colic.
  • If the child is mild, gentle, and calm, then it contraindicates Chamomilla.
  • They are sensitive, irritable, thirsty, and hot.
  • The child wants many things, but when offered, he refuses them.
  • The child can be consoled only by carrying and petted constantly.
  • Children are prone to convulsions during dentition. During such cases, Chamomilla is beneficial.
  • In convulsion, the body becomes stiff with opisthotonos, eyes roll about, the face becomes wry, and the thumb turns inward.
  • Children get colic, diarrhea, jaundice, twitching, cough, and convulsions after anger.
  • The Infant’s breast is tender.
  • Infants do not suck the spoilt milk from mother.

Chamomilla Dosage, Potency and Repetition

Homeopathic medicines are prescribed based on symptoms similarity. The symptoms presented by the patient are matched with the symptoms of the remedy.

Depending on the extent of symptom similarity, the potency and repetition are decided.

The more significant number of symptoms that match, the higher is the potency used. Similarly, if fewer symptoms are matching with the remedy, then a lower potency is used.

Chamomilla 30C Dosage:

one can use it in conditions like toothache, colic, rheumatism, suppression of milk, etc.

3-4 pills twice or thrice a day till there is a relief.

Chamomilla 200C Dosage:

 one can use it in conditions like fever, mumps, acidity, abdominal affections, ulcers, whooping cough, headache, eye affections, breast affection, pregnancy disorders, insomnia, nausea, etc.

Four pills thrice a day for 4-5 days or till improvement and gradually taper the dosage.

Chamomilla 1M Dosage: 

one can use it in conditions like convulsions, insomnia, hysteria, spasms, etc.

Higher potencies act reasonably when the constitutional symptoms match.

The medicine can be frequently repeated till the response is noticed.
